Wildlife fatalities are routinely estimated at renewable energy facilities, but several different fatality estimators have been used during the past two decades. Fatality estimators have different assumptions, and can produce divergent estimates of total fatality, given the same input data. The multitude of estimators in use has hampered comparison of fatality rates between studies. We report on the development of a fatality estimator that generalizes three of the estimators commonly in use today. Data requirements for GenEst are similar to data requirements for the Shoenfeld, Korner-Nievergelt, or Huso estimators. Workflow for the production of fatality estimates is straightforward, and largely guided by the structure of the GUI. Finally, GenEst will provide estimates that are of a similar magnitude to those from estimators that are currently in use when their assumptions hold, and will provide more accurate estimates when they don’t.
