POSTER: Classification of New Species Using Machine Vision

20 Mar 18
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Tracks: Eagle Policy, Biology, and Permits, Poster Presentation

Machine vision technologies have been developed for detecting and classifying eagles in real time for applications to wind turbine curtailment when the eagle is threatened. However, eagles are not the only species of concern. Machine vision algorithms are driven by training data, and sufficient data are difficult to obtain for rare species prior to machine vision deployment. An example is presented of ways to develop classification algorithms based on a paucity of data. Strategies are discussed for protecting rare species while simultaneously gathering data to allow more precise algorithms to be developed.
