In the session "Bat-Be-Gone 2000 (or 2020)" we explored how technology is helping to reduce mortality of bats, generally. Developers and operators must still contend with “taking” of bats that are protected under the Endangered Species Act and equivalent state laws. This creates the challenge of “monitoring” for impacts to specific bat species, and for events that are – by definition – extremely rare. How can the wind industry satisfy regulatory requirements without “breaking the bank”?
