Tapping into two core American values - local economic health and national security – wind development in some areas was threatened by claims that wind turbines could have negative effects on military installations. Despite a rich and successful history of wind projects working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense (DOD) to ensure any impacts are manageable, the industry faced several attempts at the state and federal level to legislate “extra” protections for military operations that would be highly restrictive.
