The grain industry has seen a rise in employee substance use/abuse amongst prospective candidates and current employees. This trend presents challenges including increased safety risks, decreased productivity, difficulties retaining skilled employees and increased cost associated with hiring and training new employees. This session will give an overview of the signs of substance abuse, causes of use and tools to engage prospective and current employees to get support for their challenges. Additionally, this session will explore  workplace culture and conditions that may contribute to addiction. Attendees will learn conversational tools and practice initiating dialogue with employees around drug habits.

Participants will also discover alternative solutions for recruitment and retention of employees through case studies and idea sharing. By arming employers with the knowledge to recognize substance abuse and tools to support employees to address their dependence, employers may mitigate some of the effects of addiction in the workforce and improve the employee culture of their organization. This session does not replace official reasonable suspicion trainings.
