Wind Project O&M and Safety Conference 2018

"The Role of Control" - How Advanced Wind Turbine Controls Can Be Geared Towards Performance, Reliability and Longevity Improvements. (Room Upper Grande Hall)

27 Feb 18
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Tracks: Emerging Technology

Did you know that wind turbines don't communicate with each other!? Prominent among the rapidly progressing innovations in wind power today is the use of advanced controls which take advantage of increases in computer power, advanced control methods, and advances in sensor and actuator technology. These innovations will allow for reductions in the cost of energy through improved energy capture, reduced operations and maintenance costs, and improvements in reliability. Advanced controls are under development to allow wind farms to be more productive as a whole and last longer. Current control design and practice will be presented as well as opportunities and challenges of advanced methodologies. Controls for normal operation and extreme conditions will be discussed along with controls using advanced sensing and actuation and for improved reliability. Current cutting edge controls research includes whole wind farm control for improved performance and reduced stresses that will lead to improved reliability.
