Disrupt the Odds: Enhancing Community Preparedness and Response (Room Maryland Ballroom C)

As medical providers embedded within the fabric of a community, EMS is uniquely situated to help identify and prevent public health problems and other safety issues. In this session, you'll learn how three EMS agencies have partnered with other state and local services and systems to drive the implementation of cutting-edge, forward-thinking approaches to national problems within their community. Each of these agencies identified a need and worked to obtain the required funds and operational support, and as a result, have been a significant force of positive change. These programs include:

  • University Hospital's EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute's far-reaching “Stop the Bleed” program, which has trained thousands of school staff and placed “Stop the Bleed Buckets” in hundreds of Cleveland-area classrooms;
  • San Diego Fire-Rescue's Project Heartbeat, which has helped to place more than 8,000 AEDs throughout the San Diego region, and works with local businesses and schools to lead or assist in numerous CPR training initiatives; and
  • Round Rock Fire Department and the Williamson County EMS Mobile Outreach Team, which has expanded its scope beyond mental health calls and now responds to opioid overdoses not only to provide patients and their family with lifesaving naloxone, but to arrange for longer-term treatment—and to offer it quickly—even if the patient is uninsured.
