Preventing EMS Legal Fires (Room National Harbor 5)

20 Feb 19
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Tracks: Administration & Leadership - Executive

EMS organizations are continually under the threat of litigation from the public and at times our own firefighters, EMT's, staff or their families. Many times, failure to administer a policy, stop discriminatory behavior, applying a faulty technique or tactic coupled with outdated Policies may result in litigation. This class focuses on the high risk legal issues facing EMS organizations. The class will include the need to develop specific and general policies including anti-discrimination and anti-harassment; discuss how adequate documentation is used as a cornerstone of a legal defense; a discussion of the 1st Amendment, freedom of speech and social media and how it affects your organization and finally the need for a strong driver education program. This class is designed for all levels in emergency services to provide an awareness of the top legal issues facing our organizations.
