Modern radio-communication-systems regularly employ frequency-hopping methods to suppress interference or prevent fading. However, frequency-hopping also influences data-throughput, thus requiring quick frequency-settling. Complex test-setups were necessary to determine settling time of a frequency hop. A new generation of phase noise analyzers measures frequency settling time with less effort and provides rapid results. In addition to measuring frequency settling, modern phase noise analyzers can also record phase settling – a very important measurement for phase-modulated transmission methods and one that is extremely difficult to perform using conventional methods. This paper describes different methods to measure and characterize frequency hopping and settling time with a modern signal analyzer architecture. We present a method of efficient trouble shooting carrier frequency instabilities.
