The Evolving Satellite Communications Market (Room 310B)

If all continues to go according to forecast, the satellite communications industry will continue to be disrupted by satellites that are smaller, smarter, cheaper to launch, and more readily replaceable. They will also drive innovation on the ground, and become vital to the formation of new companies, new applications for research and science and presumably a better quality of life.  The bet is that new customers will have access to the Internet and services at affordable rates.  The “sure bets” appear to be maritime, aerospace a and agritech, where fiber and terrestrial communications are not available and cannot compete.  But if there is to be growth to justify these investments, will there need to be a role for satellites to support emerging markets such as “smart cities” and other forms of transportation and lifestyle?
