EMERGENCY! Dealing with Disaster – Rebuilding after the Fires (Room 153, Esplanade)

It came as a wicked surprise. Fire. In the middle of the night, without warning. 5% of homes lost. The Wine Country fires came on the heels of several other major disasters. Earthquakes/climate change/flooding and sea level rise are at the back of everyone's minds. Government, land development and homebuilding panelists will profile the aftermath of the Wine Country disaster efforts to rebuild in an area with nearly zero vacancies and extremely high land and development costs. We will discuss a streamlined approval processes for rebuilding, concepts for emergency shelter and ADU's, as well as the rebuilding of neighborhoods in the wildland-urban interface zone. We will also discuss how these concepts can translate to disasters in other areas to speed emergency intervention to provide shelter and streamline rebuilding efforts. Post-emergency, these concepts may be applied more broadly to provide permanent solutions to farm worker, student, & low-cost housing opportunities.
