Reducing Friction for Green Multifamily Buildings (Room 154, Esplanade)

Green multifamily housing is increasingly desired and expected by renters and buyers on the West Coast. How does a project stand out and capture the attention of investors, renters and buyers in a competitive market? Come to this workshop to learn why leading developers use LEED, hear pros/cons of meeting LEED in a state with green codes, and gather tips on working with contractors and subcontractors to achieve your project’s sustainability goals.

Nationwide, 25% of the multifamily construction industry is leveraging LEED certification as a trusted label for communicating leadership in energy efficiency, water conservation, and healthy spaces for residents and communities. California is leading the country with 175,000 multifamily units using LEED, even in a state with a robust energy and green building codes (CALGreen).  This workshop will explore how to meet the demands of rating systems like LEED, succeed with local requirements like CALGreen, and reduce conflict and friction when building to sustainability guidelines for multifamily projects.

Presenters at this workshop will share strategies for success in building to code requirements like CALGreen and leveraging those required elements in pursuit of LEED. Representatives from the U.S. Green Building Council will share how the newest rating system, LEED version 4.1, has been updated for the multifamily market sector, including improved connections between the rating system and codes. Projects built in California can leverage a new Title 24, Part 6 energy scoring pathway and new LEED paperwork streamlining measures to reduce paperwork and amplify efforts to build green. Leading developers will share insights on making the business case for green construction and will highlight best practices in managing a green construction project from start to finish. Panelists will provide advice on navigating the patchwork of sustainability requirements in various markets, and suggest design strategies and project delivery approaches that tend to be successful regardless of the project location.
