Evolving the Single Family Home into a Dwelling (Room 307, Level 3)

The detached house is no longer the bastion of the traditional family: mom, dad, two kids and a dog. Changing demographics and lifestyle trends—decreasing marriage and birth rates, expanding definitions of marriage, cohousing arrangements ranging from roommates of convenience to “voluntary kin”—are influencing where homes are purchased, what features are desired in a home, and how those features are reflected in the design itself. Single-family homes must accommodate a wider range of people than a traditionally defined single family. This session will discuss the demographic and lifestyle diversification of homebuyers, how design is changing to reflect these trends, and how one developer/builder has tapped into these changes to create ongoing success.
