A reactive sputtering R2R process and equipment has matured to produce high-performance ultra-barrier films for indirect encapsulation of flexible opto-electronics such as photovoltaic solar cells, OLED displays and lighting, quantum dot displays and electrophoretic displays. We will review our R2R sputter equipment and process selection as they relate to the integration of barrier film to opto-electronic devices. Optical index matched barrier coatings yield high transmission (>88%) when laminated to different polymer films used in construction of opto-electronic devices. These barrier film coatings are applied in a single pass at line speeds exceeding 2 m/min on substrates up to 1.35 m in width. Product yield has been demonstrated to exceed 95% for production runs of greater than 15,000 m2. We present WVTR measurements by the MOCON and calcium test methods of different barrier film constructions along with device demonstrations. We discuss successes in barrier film product integration as well as current challenges for integration in flexible opto-electronic products.
