The silent chain (also known as inverted tooth chain) is often used in a power transmitting for the automobile, motorcycle or the like under high speed and high load conditions, which require improved wear-resistance from the desire for a high-speed operation and long service life. The wear between the silent chain and the sprocket mostly occurs on the meshing chain surface that strictly speaking is the teeth inner and outer flank. In order to address wear-oriented problems in silent chains, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been considered to strengthen tribological properties owing to their low friction coefficient and good chemical inertness. This study presents Titanium-based DLC coatings prepared by the High-power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) technique, in which a mass production type holder was specially designed for the specific meshing surface of silent chain. The results show that the high-biased ion bombardment pretreatment and gradient coating method not only improve adhesion of HIPIMS Ti-DLC coating but also enhance the anti-wear and friction properties for silent chain application.
