69 - Lifting High Value Hardware (Room 352C)

23 Oct 18
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Tracks: Operational/Technical/Regulatory

Lockheed Martin Space designs and builds high-value, oftentimes one-of-a-kind spacecraft for government customers (e.g., Hubble Space Telescope, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter). There is no room for failure in this arena. The build process employs cranes and accessory hoisting equipment, and a risk of dropped hardware is present whenever a piece of spaceflight hardware is “on the hook.” The LMS ESH, Facilities Operations, and Assembly, Test and Launch Operations organizations have teamed over the years to drive down the risks inherent in these processes. This presentation will discuss what the groups do to ensure “100% Mission Success” for their customers, as well as lessons learned from past failures and the broader lifting community.
