61 - Green Can Be Just as Mean (Room 382B)

Sustainability or “Going Green” are now major motivating forces in the private and public sector. However, some employers, workers and consumers believe green jobs or green products are safe (or safer) than traditional jobs. Although they may be better for the environment, most green jobs or products pose safety and health hazards for workers and consumers that are similar – or in addition – to traditional jobs or products. Safety professionals are now faced with the challenge of ensuring that adequate safety procedures aren’t ignored by employers or workers simply because the work or product carries the title of “green.” It’s important to understand that sustainability and safety are not synonymous. In this session, you’ll learn why understanding and minimizing the potential hazards of green job or green products is a new necessity for the safety professional.
