Assessment centers are used for all ranks in the fire service. Most fire departments contract with vendors or delegate the assessment center to their human resource departments. These assessment centers are designed by non-firefighters, yet the only way to be promoted, especially in a civil service, is by excelling during your assessment center. The assessment center is a "game" and the only way to "win" is to understand the rules, prepare and execute. This presentation will prepare you for the grueling assessment center process and provide you with the opportunity to learn the "how and why" behind the methods. The assessment center process is predictable and learnable. With this class and with a strong desire to prepare and study, you will increase your chances for success in your next assessment center. The presenter will use interactive slides, pictures and videos to explain the "how and why" factors, and will allow for class interaction and participation as students review and demonstrate the four phases of a typical fire service assessment center: 1.) the written examination 2.) the tactical assessment, 3.) the oral interview and 4.) the in-basket exercise.
