Reaching a Fire Department Threshold (Room 2A)

23 Feb 18
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Tracks: Company Officer

Today, there is a push to create the latest and greatest when it comes to hose deployments, tactics and strategies. This class reviews a brief history of the fire service; specifically the areas mentioned and how we have progressed. However, progress does not mean we have to move away from the basics, and learn every way to pack hose. We should be focusing on what works for our department and ensuring that we can readily deploy what we already have on our units. This class will focus on moving mindsets back to mastering the “rookie book.” For very senior department members, they may not have trained on these topics for several years. At the end of the day, we must rely on the basics to ensure that everyone goes home. Once basic skills are mastered, we can now shift our focus to our people by building their confidence in themselves, their shift and the leader. A considerable amount of time will be spent on why we should master basic skills, what “mastering” a skill looks like and what this team/shift looks like.
