This presentation is an overview of the growing mental health and suicide epidemic among firefighters. Anecdotal evidence indicates that suicide in firefighters is increasing, and something needs to be done. When a firefighter takes his or her own life, the family, friends, and coworkers are left wondering what happened, why it happened, how did they not see it coming, and how could they have prevented it. This presentation provides the answers to those questions. It will provide the attendees with tools to recognize signs and symptoms, assess the risk level, and help identify and create appropriate resources within your department and community.
