The Power of Scratch: Hands-On Coding Within the Content Areas (Room North 220C)

Tracks: Future of EdTech Educator

Last year’s announcement of the CS For All initiative gave birth to a burning question among teachers: how do we incorporate coding in the curriculum effectively? Particularly, educators began investigating ways in which these coding activities, aside form addressing the Technology Standards, they also correlate with Reading, Writing, Math, & Science Standards. The purpose of this session is to demystify coding and to demonstrate effective strategies of teaching coding within the content areas. Instead of just attempting a theoretical approach of how Scratch can be used in the classroom, the presenter of this dynamic session demonstrates specific ways in which coding with Scratch can be used in the classroom to enhance teaching across the content areas. Participants will learn now to write digital storytelling programs (Reading, Writing, Social Studies); how to write a program that solves addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems (Math, STEAM); how to program a reading activity with predetermined outcomes (Reading, Writing), and how to program an environment in which they can run scientific tests (Science, STEAM).
