Recognizing Truths and Lies: Media Literacy in the New Era (Room Bayhill 22)

The spread of misinformation is nothing new, but websites and social media make it far easier to distribute and more difficult to detect. In this workshop, you will explore strategies you can use for yourself and with your students to effectively evaluate the truth in what they read, see and hear. You will become familiar with common methods employed to distort the meaning of numbers and statistics, review effective strategies for evaluating words, and evaluate the authenticity of information examples presented to you in the workshop. Plus, you will not only learn how to accurately assess information, but also take away strategies to teach your students to be more aware of and able to discern facts from fiction.
