Buy and Build Accessible: How to Choose and Create Digital Resources for All Learners (Room Bayhill 17)

Schools are widely adopting ebooks and other online resources to enhance learning for students. And many educators are creating or using supplemental digital curricula that offers interactivity and other features. However, educators often incorrectly assume that all learners can equally enjoy these materials. Students with dyslexia, visual impairments and other reading barriers can have the same challenges with ebooks and online resources that they have with printed books. Benetech, the nonprofit technology company that produces Bookshare, recently published Your Guide to Building a More Accessible Classroom and Build Accessible Coursework. In this BYOD workshop, you’ll learn how to create materials that work for the widest possible audience. This includes demonstrations of accessible and inaccessible ebooks and digital resources, along with an overview of Benetech’s Buy Accessible guidelines which detail what to look for when you’re acquiring ebooks and other materials. And you’ll get a copy of the guidelines to take home!
