Analysis of 75,000 of Aetna’s short-term disability claims triggered by musculoskeletal injuries revealed that disability durations lengthened by 35 percent when workers were diagnosed with secondary musculoskeletal ailments, considered physical comorbidities. Employer Boston Scientific launched an aggressive program to mitigate the problem after finding that more than half of the musculoskeletal-related claims filed by its employees included secondary physical comorbidities.
