Surgeons face multiple ergonomic hazards while performing open surgery, including awkward/static postures, prolonged standing, and forceful exertions resulting in significant neck and back pain — all of which can impact patient safety. Ms. Pentico will share her findings based on observations of surgeons as they operate, as well as specific ergonomic recommendations which primarily address awkward postures due to the height and/or position of the patient on the table, the position of the surgeon in relation to the patient, and the efficacy of the loupes in surgery. You will also learn how to develop a specialized ergonomics program for surgeons.
