New regulations for pressurized gas pipelines in High to Moderate population density areas will present almost impossible technical and economic challenges. Recent project planning identified hydrotesting water management as THE major risk factor. Water sourcing, storage, recycling and disposal, pigging, drying and waste generation are all significant obstacles. A new technology has been introduced which minimizes the risks associated with many of these required functions. Nanopolymers provide Micro-Encapsulating Dispersion (MFD) and desalination with a small equipment footprint that is fully automated, scalable and cost much less than transporting and disposal. Unlike traditional methods, MFD nanopolymers are near zero waste generating. The resultant floc is consolidated and used as a binder in cement products manufacturing. In recent crude oil pipeline decommissioning, this technology was used to process >1% oil contaminated seawater to dischargeable conditions in half the time and with 900% less waste generation.
