Evaluating Repair Methods to Reliably Ensure and Increase Pipeline Integrity (Room Conference Hall)

Tracks: Integrity

Pipelines are the safest mode of transportation for hazardous liquids and gases. However, there are many external factors that threaten their safe transportation through a pipeline. External and internal corrosion, dents, gouges, third-party damage, wrinkles and buckles can all lead to an eventual loss of pipeline integrity. When these anomalies are detected, the regulatory clock starts on the remediation effort. There are many different repair methods that can help restore the pipeline to its original strength, including cut out and replacement, Type A or Type B welded steel sleeves, clamps and enclosures, or permanent engineered composite repair solutions. This presentation will explore the research behind each repair method, and then discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each option. To close, the presentation will highlight a couple of case studies of successful uses of composite repairs in situations where the other repair methods were not feasible.
