Humans in the Machine: Enhancing Safety as Operations Become More Complex (Room 238)

12 Apr 18
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Tracks: Roadway Safety

The people in complex operating environments are uniquely suited to enhance safety in ways that equipment, procedures and technology cannot. Using principles from Human Factors research, we’ll explore two central issues: How direct human intervention enhances the integrity of complex systems, and how factors in most workplaces keep people from intervening when they believe something is wrong. In short, human intervention is increasingly important, but multiple factors in the workplace make it unlikely to happen. This session provides direction for anyone looking to enhance the human factor as a unique layer of protection in complex operations.
