Crystalline Silica Solutions: Best Practices for Protecting Workers and Managing Risk (Room 235)

12 Apr 18
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Tracks: Environmental & Sustainability

OSHA’s new rule regulating worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica took effect in 2017 for construction, and general industry/maritime compliance is set for 2018. The significant exposure limit reduction, coupled with new emphasis on engineering controls and revised work practices, presents challenges for employers of all sizes. OSHA health findings create obligations to minimize exposures to document compliance as a defense to workers’ compensation and tort actions. This session reviews the rule’s requirements and the status of legal challenges, and presents case examples on effective and feasible ways of achieving reductions. We’ll discuss competent person training, design of IH sampling, and exposure control plan development.
