Thirty-six billion Internet of things (IoT) devices are expected to be in use by 2021—at least four for every person on the planet. Commissioning, connecting and controlling these devices, which will encompass everything from household items to health care to sports, will be a handful of technologies already in use. These technologies will interact with the devices, as well as with RFID or NFC tags embedded in IoT objects, to provide connectivity on our terms.
