About Ville Nurmiainen

Ville Nurmiainen has over 20 years’ experience of providing inertial sensors to the automotive industry. He started his career i VTI, a company which is the market leader in low-g accelerometers for safety critical applications since the early 90’s. Ville joined the Murata team when Murata acquired VTI in 2012. He has been working in various positions in VTI/Murata from actual product design to product management and marketing and has experience working with all the major Tier1 and OEM companies worldwide. Currently Ville is working as a Business Development Manager located in Novi, Michigan and works closely with automotive industry to identify new business opportunities for sensors especially in ADAS / Autonomous driving applications.

Abstract

Fully autonomous driving – A dream or a reality? Autonomous driving has proven to be a very challenging task as noted by the number of automotive and software tech giants that are investing enormous efforts and resources to make this concept to a reality.  This task requires expertise in both hardware and software engineering and will also require new innovations in sensor technologies.  The sensors will not only need to determine the surroundings of the vehicle, but also will need to determine the vehicle dynamics and where the vehicle is located on the road.  In this case study, Murata investigated what level of localization accuracy that can be achieved when using state of the art ESC (Electronic Stability Control) sensors to compensate for GPS outages?  Can existing ESC sensors be a reasonable cost solution that provides the required accuracy level for localization in a high definition map environment or can those be used for example as a redundant sensors in case of the primary system in autonomous vehicle fails.  How will these results compare to consumer grade IMU solution? To demonstrate these sensors’ capabilities and limitations, Murata has developed and tested our in-house sensor fusion algorithm that combines data from our 6 DOF IMU (ESC Sensors) with GPS and wheel speed information. In this presentation Murata will discuss IMU use cases in Autonomous driving, share information on the test set-up and more importantly results of the actual driving test.
