Batteries are the key for energy storage. It works like memories in IT networks. In the IT network, data flows and storages in individual system layers thus electricity does in energy grid. Scalability and portability are primer demands; however energy density improvement is steady but slow because of the toughness of the breakthrough in materials and scalable energy grid system in not yet ready as a common social infrastructure. Panasonic is a leader company in Li-ion battery manufacturing especially in automotive segment such as HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs. There are three main issues in Li-ion batteries; technical issue in materials, integration issue from cell to storage system, and supply chain issue to ensure material supply including battery reuse and material recycle. Main technical challenges in Li-ion batteries are discussed following by potential applications for FHE from a customer value point of view.
