Municipal firefighters who are expected to respond to manufacturing or industrial facilities often are not fully prepared for those situations both from a fire and a rescue standpoint. Additionally, catastrophic losses can be compounded by a fire department’s lack of proactive efforts and a poorly planned response. From combustible dust explosions to high-voltage electrical fires, firefighters must understand what makes these properties different from a typical single-family dwelling. To be effective at decreasing and preventing personnel and property losses before and after a fire occurs at a manufacturing or an industrial facility, you must know and understand what goes on inside the facility. This workshop hones firefighters’ abilities to consider a fire or an incident that extends well beyond the scope of a room-and-contents or other bread-and-butter type response, focusing on those high-risk, low-frequency events that everyone will encounter at some point.
