As more distributed energy resources (DER) are adopted, utility distribution planning departments are juggling more project applications—many with the need for deeper, more complex analysis. At the same time, customer service and regulatory relations groups face greater expectations for faster processing, improved status transparency, and clear information on the best locations for new projects. For New York utilities, the NY REV process has defined standard interconnection requirements (SIR) for DER application review. The SIR are evolving over time, making it important for New York utilities to act quickly but remain flexible. In this session, leading New York utility representatives speak on their utility’s progress in meeting the NY REV requirements for interconnection online application portals (IOAP), project screens, and hosting capacity information. The best practices presented are relevant for utilities preparing for a future with more DER, including: streamlining interconnection application processing; improving process transparency for customers, applicants and the utility; collecting complete and accurate DER project data for analysis and reporting; providing DER developers with information needed to site projects more effectively; and, leveraging existing system planning, GIS and customer information tools in the process.
