Distributed energy resources (DER), microgrid deployments and customer service demands are changing how medium-voltage distribution systems are planned, operated, controlled, protected and managed. Synchrophasor measurement technology, now widely adopted in transmission systems, can be applied to new challenges in distribution systems. This course explains technical requirements, use cases and design approaches for synchrophasor measurement technology used in distribution systems. It includes discussion of the communications systems and control capabilities that accompany distribution synchrophasor deployments. Presentations include specifics of measurement apparatus, communications system technologies, and system architectures that support collection of synchrophasor data and deployment of the use cases. Case studies of actual deployments highlight experiences with monitoring and controlling the distribution circuit, as well as protection for faults and failures. Attendees receive guidance for development of practical solutions they can apply as their own utilities’ distribution systems evolve.
