UU 102: Using Standard Communication Protocols for the Grid of Today and Managing Distributed Energy Resources in the Future (#D0143) (Room 209)

**Evaluate this course. **

This course provides background on standard communication protocols used for SCADA and distributed energy resource (DER) applications in the grid. The widely adopted IEC 61850 and DNP3 standards and emerging protocols IEEE 2030.5 and OpenADR are discussed. A high-level view of how the protocols function is provided along with a discussion of use cases, data modeling and mapping for each protocol. In addition, MESA, SunSpec and other standards for DER integration are addressed. The challenges of DER and distribution automation communications are covered, including use cases, requirements and evaluation of each protocol against the requirements. The objectives are to understand the basics of how the protocols work, where and why the protocols are used. For each of these protocols being used for standardization of communications, the attendees should gain a general understanding of data transfer mechanisms, messages and commands, supported data types, protocol layers and security features.

Who should attend this course?

  • Engineers, IT personnel and managers responsible for SCADA or DER integration projects
  • System integrators involved in SCADA or DER integration
  • Product managers for smart grid, SCADA or DER products and services
  • Software developers implementing communications for SCADA or DER integration
