Impulse Steam Turbine diaphragms are known to dish in service, especially in higher temperature regions of the turbine. Minor dishing has successfully been repaired using mechanical techniques and/or offset interface components such as packing rings and spill strips. Major dishing has not had such a consolidated approach with a myriad of repair techniques being proposed in the industry. GE Power has completed a survey of the materials used in diaphragm construction and failure modes thereof, and can now make recommendations to optimize repair recommendations versus the competing objectives of repair life and outage cycle. Techniques to be compared include heat straightening, addition of bridges, material changes in the diaphragm and weld alone and in various combinations. Both numerical analysis and production repairs will be discussed.
