Siemens E-Class Technology - the Strong Focus on Operational Flexibility (Room Nile 2)

Today’s Asian power market faces a lot of different challenges. Operators are forced to reduce maintenance cost, consider aspects such as efficiency optimization, increased power output as well as operational and fuel flexibility. This paper deals with the R&D efforts and results to increase operational flexibility to meet the market requirements. The SGT5-2000E gas turbine frame (formerly known as V94.2), which are of special relevance for the Asia power market needs: latest upgrades to optimize the engine performance (power output and efficiency), operational and fuel flexibility and measures to reduce the overall maintenance efforts and costs. The development of Siemens SGT5-2000E gas turbine frame started in the early 1980s. More than 35 years, the frame has been continuously updated, using an evolutionary development approach and allowing to keep the engine’s technology state of the art, while minimizing technical risks and maximizing engine reliability. A worldwide fleet of more than 500 engines has been installed by Siemens and its licensees. New built engines, but also the operation and maintenance concepts for the SGT5-2000E are going through a continuous development process, improving the operational capabilities and keeping the total life cycle cost of the SGT5-2000E on a benchmark level for the industry. This paper describes the results of an extensive R&D-program, which led to a further improvement of the already most successful upgrade product, the Siemens innovative 3D Blades and Vanes (Si3DTM). The Si3DTM enhanced blading now allows for a higher power limit, with drastically improved robustness and thus significantly reduced maintenance costs. In addition latest developments to increase the power output - such as the second compressor mass flow upgrade (CMF++) - and to optimize the operational flexibility are shown. Finally an overview on the latest operation experiences with a variety of different fuels is given.
