Island Mode Operation (IMO) for Thai Gas Combined SPP Plants (Room Nile 1)

In Thai SPP (Small Power Producer) plants, there is a certain limitation of electric power (MW) to be supplied to the PEA grid while balance MW as well as heat energy is supplied to the surrounding industrial users. Sudden isolation of the PEA grid connection may take place by various reasons, resulting with the generating power to the PEA grid has to be reduced instantly but supply of the balance power and heat energy to the industrial users have to be kept (called IMO, i.e. Island Operation Mode operation). Sudden reduction of the power demand by the IMO causes sharp frequency increase which eventually trips all the generating units by overspeed (or high-frequency) protections resulting with blackout. Special system consideration has to be made to keep stable operation of electrical as well as heat energy supply to the users in case of such operation. This paper explains how the system design considerations and operational scenarios are made in the actual SPP plants to achieve the stable operation.
