Tutorial: mmWave Communications for Military Applications (Room 301)

This tutorial aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of millimeter wave, or “mmWave,” communications, within the context of application to the military communications domain. mmWave communications techniques, operating in the 30 to 300 GHz frequency band, have received increasing attention from the commercial sector over the past five years as they present an opportunity to harvest vast amounts of previously inaccessible spectrum and are increasingly considered a key part of the future commercial wireless landscape. This tutorial will provide attendees with a technical overview of mmWave concepts, including a thorough discussion of both the opportunities and technical challenges presented by this new frequency band. The tutorial will examine many key mmWave technologies, including the recent IEEE

802.11ad standard and mmWave technologies within the context of 5G cellular. The tutorial will also discuss in detail mmWave RF propagation and the difficulties it presents to mmWave performance. Furthermore, the tutorial will provide a detailed discussion on mmWave hardware complexities and the challenges they pose to widespread mmWave implementation and adoption. Finally, the tutorial will address many key research topics

that are commonly discussed in conjunction with mmWave, including Heterogeneous Networking (HetNet), small-cell cellular techniques, and Massive MIMO.
