2017 INSS: Intelligence & National Security Summit

Plenary Session 5: Directors' Perspectives on National Intelligence (Room Ballroom A)

Overview
Six organizations are at the core of the 17-member Intelligence Community (IC). Their responsibilities revolve around the types of information they collect, the expertise they provide and the decision-makers they support. All face evolving threats and challenges, changing circumstances and demands, and rapid advances in digital and commercial capabilities. All are called upon to produce efficiencies, while increasing effectiveness. In this session, IC directors will address their top priorities, the issues and challenges they face, and how they are adapting to changing circumstances to take advantage of attendant opportunities, including greater interagency and public-private collaboration.

Focus questions

  • How are you meeting the simultaneous demands for mission effectiveness and greater efficiencies in your operations and budgets?
  • How are you doing in recruiting, developing and retaining an expert workforce with requisite skills to accomplish your missions in this complex world?
  • What impact is the explosion of data, multiplicity of sources, evolution of social media and advances in digital capabilities having and how are you adapting to these rapidly changing circumstances?
  • Are evolving commercial capabilities in competition with traditional intelligence missions and capabilities?  Where are you integrating commercial capabilities and what are your greatest needs?
