Session Abstract: Rapid DNA technology has integrated and automated the traditional forensic laboratory processes of developing a DNA profile into a single instrument. The self-contained Rapid DNA system can be used in office or field environments to identify individuals or verify family relationship claims in under two hours. Standardized DNA profiles can be obtained from cheek (buccal) samples or other human samples. Applications for Rapid DNA include law enforcement processing of DNA to obtain a CODIS-compatible profile; evaluation of family relationship (kinshp) claims for immigration or prevention of human trafficking; and reunification of families following critical incidents or mass casualty events. This session will provide an overview of current Rapid DNA technology, current operational evaluations and uses, and the validations, certifications and legal authority for use.
