This tutorial will describe the fundamental technologies, terms and concepts associated with Modeling and Simulation (M&S); and describe M&S development and application in the Department of Defense (DoD). It will discuss various aspects of M&S use and interoperability, presenting their role in enabling DoD functions and enhancing reuse. This tutorial will identify key policies and procedures for DoD M&S, and present the Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VV&A) process that ensures that models and simulations meet the needs of their users. It will present the role of DoD M&S standards in DoD M&S tools and functional use; and the relationship to the Joint Information Enterprise (JIE) and cloud-based DoD IT. It will describe the characteristics and associated challenges of M&S and applications within the DoD functional areas of: Training, Analysis, Acquisition, Test and Evaluation, Experimentation, Medical, Planning and Intelligence. This tutorial will also identify accessible DoD M&S information resources.
