Payer Negotiation for Value-Based Payment - Strategies to Maximize Success (Room Crystal)

Payers are rapidly pushing away from fee-for-service reimbursement towards various types of value-based or risk-based payment models. These payers employ professional negotiators and advanced tactics to achieve their objectives, and have robust detail regarding provider information and utilization at their disposal. Knowledge of negotiating strategies, new reimbursement methods and the payers' tactics is absolutely critical to having value successfully recognized. In this session, the presenter, a former managed care executive turned physician-advocate who spent 18 years working for various payers, will explore practical strategies for negotiating with the payers in this new health care environment. Participants will learn how to evaluate their position as well as the position of their opponent. They will determine the best course of action for their practice when analyzing these new payment models. Finally, attendees will be armed with effective strategies should they be confronted with risk-based contracts or Accountable Care Organization arrangements.
