As the otolaryngology administrator knows, the flow of your practice is very complex. The more complex the flow, the harder it is to keep logjams and bottlenecks from creeping in. The key to practice flow is to have the systems and space of input, throughput and output in sync to direct patients to the appropriate clinic, surgery center or ancillary department. To be effective, you have to understand of how the output capacity of your doctors, the throughput capacity of your staff and space, and the input of the appointment template are all related. It also takes an understanding of how to determine not only the output of your doctors but the output potential of your doctors if the logjams were removed. This output potential is what your practice should strive for and base all decisions.
