Beginning with high-deductible health plans and cost sharing models – which started about a decade ago – and continuing to the creation of health insurance exchanges – written into the Affordable Care Act – consumerism has been on a steady rise in healthcare. There are a number of trends stemming from a shift toward consumer-driven healthcare. Among these are mega trends of moving from: 1) treatment to prevention; 2) "practitioner-focused" to "patient-centric" models of care; 3) bureaucracy to innovation; and 4) “disconnected” to “hyper-connected” care. Practices that ride the waves of these changes might be in a better position to stay financially sustainable in an era when competitive pricing and patient satisfaction can make or break a practice’s chances of succeeding. Audience participation is strongly encouraged.
