Healthcare is in a mode of consolidation at both the payer level, hospital level and physician group practice level. It is important for groups to understand what the drivers of consolidation are and if these drivers apply to our group. Each market is unique, so discussion and analysis of one’s market is a very important component to understanding the need to merge or the opportunity a merger might bring about. The entire merger or integration process will be undertaken starting with goal setting, establishment of the steering committee, identification of and discussion of the pros and cons of the various merger models, review of the physicians’ issues to be addressed, the operational issues to be addressed and the timeline for measuring a successful merger.
