Sara Cutler, PhD, technical service manager for Kemin Industries, describes the ingredient-related challenges and factors that affect the stability and palatability of pet food. Not only can slight diet composition changes in novel ingredients such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats directly impact shelf life, but so can the level of unsaturation of fats and oils. However, the method and location of fat or oil addition can be modified to meet the desired labeling and shelf life requirements. In addition, protein source and its quality must be carefully evaluated to maintain diet quality.
