The 2019 Pool & Spa Show

GENESIS CONSTRUCTION 221: Site Evaluations, Instrumentation and Equipment (Room 414)

This technical, hands-on class is designed specifically for the pool and landscape trades. Students are introduced to terminology to properly interpret and enhance construction drawings, topographical surveys, plan views, and section views. Students will work through a series of exercises using field-measurement tools to obtain topographical information, documentable for future design purposes. Students are then provided plans and sections for a fictitious project that must be accurately laid out to ensure proper construction. Finally, the program continues with discussions about equipment and its limitations, from excavators and loaders to rammers and D-9s. All students should take home the confidence that they can accurately employ proper equipment to solve surveying and layout challenges during grading, excavation, and construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish dimensions, elevations, slopes, angles, line-of-sight issues, setbacks, easements, and other layout parameters of difficult and unusual worksites.

  • Interpret the use of lasers, site levels, transits, tapes, aerial photos, county records, and satellite imagery.

  • Define specific equipment to obtain field measurements and discuss documentation for future design purposes.

  • Identify specific equipment best suited and techniques necessary for proper layout, grading, and excavation operations in the field.
