A look at the causes and effects of combined chlorine (CC) and disinfection by products (DBPs) at recreational water facilities. Chlorine is the most commonly used primary disinfectant for recreational water. When used properly, chlorine effectively prevents countless recreational water illnesses (RWIs). Pool owners, operators, and service professionals should be aware that there are side effects to chlorine-based treatment applications, most notably, the formation of CC that leads to noxious DPBs. Proven data has shown, in sufficient concentration in the water or the air above the pool surface, DPBs can be harmful to humans. This presentation will define the different classes of CC and DBPs, the formation of both, and the reported health issues associated with high levels of DBPs in water and air. This will include an explanation of guidelines to manage CC and limit the build-up of DPBs. There will also be a new look at breakpoint chlorination and methods for improving indoor air quality at aquatic facilities.
